Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine, The Aviator) and Rooney Mara (Her, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) star in this romantic drama adapted from the novel by Patricia Highsmith (originally titled The Price of Salt).

In the 1950s a New York department store employee and amateur photographer Therese Belivet (Mara) meets Carol Aird (Blanchett), a lady who has come to buy a Christmas present for her young daughter Rindy (Kennedy and Sadie Heim).

The two women soon strike up a friendship and, with Carol going through a divorce from husband Harge (Kyle Chandler), they decide to go away on a trip to Chicago where their relationship develops into a romance. But with Rindy's custody in question, Carol, worrying that she will be cut off from her daughter because of the nature of her relationship with Therese, has no choice but to leave. Despite their love for each other is their romance doomed to fail?

The film was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Actress (Blanchett), Best Supporting Actress (Mara) and Best Original Score (Carter Burwell).

Industry Reviews

'Both women are magnificent and it's thanks to them, and to Haynes's refined talent, that this story of love and passion is so convincing, so tender, and so painful.' - David Stratton, The Australian

'Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara take us inside a passionate story of desire and retribution that's both satisfying and disturbing.' - Paul Byrnes, Sydney Morning Herald

'I can think of no better way to describe Carol/i> to others - it is so powerful, so important, so real and alive that it makes you forget it's not happening to you.' - Danielle Riendeau, Polygon

'To call Carol a Christmas miracle feels like a gaudy understatement, but that's sort of exactly what it is.' Kristen Yoonsoo Kim, Complex

'What Haynes gets so perfectly right with this film really is the very specific sense of time and place.' - Lesley Coffin, The Mary Sue
