Harriet Beecher Stowe praised Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp as powerful, and the National Anti-Slavery Standard called it the greatest antislavery novel ever written. It made Harriet Beecher Stowe resolve to write Uncle Tom's Cabin to compete with it. Although less remembered today, Dred, published in 1856, became another weapon in the war against slavery. Exploring the moral and social implications of slavery, Dred tells the story of Dred, a fugitive slave, who lives in the Great Dismal Swamp and embodies retribution and judgment against the slaveholding South. Nina Gordon, a young heiress, grapples with her conscience and the injustices of the plantation system.
