The economic dynamism of Southeast Asia's tiger economies sparked a widespread interest in their industrial policies. Prior to the Asian crisis of 1997, talk of an 'Asian model' of capitalism, distinct from the prevailing Anglo-American norm, abounded. This book tests that hypothesis by providing an analysis of the industrial policies of these states. Furthermore, by providing a specific analysis of the automotive sector, it demonstrates that even in these economies dependent relations continue to exist. The book reveals that talk of an 'Asian model' of capitalism fails to capture the complexity of industrial policy in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Only by exploring the specific nature of the interrelationships between government, domestic and foreign capital, and their relationship with the wider global economy, can we identify the real prospects for, and challenges to, economic development. Abbott's detailed cross-country study of the automotive industry in Southeast Asia provides precisely such an analysis. This book contains country studies focusing on Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. It will be of interest to students and researchers of International Political Economy, Development Studies, the Automotive Industry and Economics.
