A decent, harried young banker travels north to Scotland and his mysteriously troubled sister. A single mother struggles to make a home for her family in a society she only vaguely comprehends. A baby girl is abandoned in a bus station and picked up by a stranger. A caller leaves threatening messages. Brilliantly structured and tense as a thriller, CRIMINALS shows how the best intentions can have the worst results - and how families pull together, form themselves anew, and occasionally, tear apart.

None of the characters in this sharp and intriguing novel sets out to be a criminal, by the end most would probably still not consider that they were. Yet each has ridden a moral rollercoaster which has subtly tested their beliefs and attitudes. Ewan is an upright young banker visiting his distraught sister in Scotland; behind him he leaves the worry that he may inadvertently have been involved in insider dealing. So when he finds an abandoned baby, it seems only natural to take it with him and ask Mollie to look after it until the police can be contacted. For Mollie the baby is a refuge from the emotional and psychological turmoil that followed the break-up of her marriage, and it doesn't seem wrong to keep the baby. Kenneth hadn't really intended to abandon the baby, but when the stranger picks it up it seems an ideal opportunity for a little blackmail. So the scene is set for a spare, haunting tale which wraps each of the characters inexorably within a web of intrigue, deception and doubt. (Kirkus UK)
