Vidal's historical novel set in the 5th century BC and narrated by Cyrus Spitama, son of a Persian prince and Greek sorceress, grandson of the prophet Zoroaster, and ambassador to the courts of India, China and Greece. Pericles, Thucydides, Sophocles and Confucius are among the book's characters.

Lucid and thought provoking explanation of existentialism

Mr Barrett provides a great insight into philosophy in general, and existentialism in particular. Written 60 years ago, it refers to "man" and "he", and is thus dated in this and other respects, yet if this is able to be endured the insights into philosophy are well worth it. I found this an interesting, educational, and easy to read book, and have enjoyed discussing its contents with family and friends. It provided me with an explanation as to how western culture evolved into the terrifying corner it has painted itself into; how western societies can be so devoid of meaning, why technology has become so primary and overwhelming in our lives; and how western philosophy has underwritten our flight from confronting our lack of, and need for a fuller, more rounded way of being that places nature, love, loss, and art to be as important as science to our beautiful planet's continued existence.
