At 23, Scott Harris had a dream job, great friends and a passion for the outdoors.

Then one sunny day in November 2008, everything came to a crashing halt: his 450cc dirt bike slammed into his buddy's in a head-on collision that nearly killed them both. Fifteen days in an induced coma, a complete facial reconstruction and countless surgeries were followed by years of intensive rehabilitation. With exhausting mental and physical effort, Scott learned how to walk, talk and think again. He could have given up - with only one working arm and a severe brain injury, every day was a challenge. Instead, with the help of an amazing medical team, Scott pushed himself to the limit, setting goals and developing the will to achieve them.

In time Scott set his ultimate goal: to travel solo around the world. By snowboarding in Canada, backpacking in Europe, sailing down the Nile, and island-hopping in Greece - where he met the love of his life, Jasmine - Scott regained his independence and built a new and fulfilling life.

Crashing Into Potential is the incredible story of coming to terms with acquired physical disabilities, living with an injured brain, and the unfailing determination to never give up.

WRITE A REVIEW

An inspiring read

5

Scott's determination shone throughout this book. He did a great job of making it so clear and relatable to any reader how a brain injury impacts your life. I loved reading about his adventures and how the 18 months of travel not only opened his eyes to the world but reminded him how truly capable he is of anything. I didn't expect to read this book and be inspired to go traveling again but I have been!

Amazingly uplifting story

I've just finished reading Scott's book, and it's a great read where you can really experience his journey first hand, and begin to understand what it's like living with a brain injury. I'd definitely recommend this book as something to read which will show you how a can do attitude can overcome adversity, and give you perspective on what's really important. A great uplifting message and very funny in places, Scott makes the story very relatable for whoever the reader might be.

"…in these pages there are lessons for all of us." This sentence in the forward of Scott Harris' book says it all, really. No matter your life experience or exposure to people with acquired brain injuries, the story of Scott's accident and his courageous, inspiring recovery will teach you things about yourself and this shared life we all live that you'll be thankful to know. The biggest take-away for me is a new outlook on how I will face adversity next time it strikes in my life. If it's anything like the way Scott does, I'll be a better person for it. Not only is this a life-affirming, though-provoking and moving read, it's also entertaining. Scott's writing style is effortless and his personality shines through on every page. The book reads like a documentary, allowing us into his vivid world – from the hospital ward to the rest of the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn something about the power of determination.

Fascinating and enthralling story of recovery

5

It's so great to read Scott's journey of recovery from a severe brain injury and a near-death experience. He was in a coma for ages and rehab for much longer. Even the doctors didn't give him much hope. But he stuck in there, persisted, and became a much stronger and kinder person. And he found true love. Highly recommended!

An amazing, down to earth, story about resilience

5

Scott's story is an impressive one. It's not just the accident, his rehabilitation, and the goals he sets for himself afterwards; it's also how he tells the story. He has a very natural writing style that really brings it all to life - you really get a good idea what he experienced. Most of all, his resilience shines through in every page; and it makes you question how you would respond if you were in his shoes. For me, the seeds that he planted kept me thinking about my own challenges long after I finished reading the book. Motivational, yes. But not of the cheesy You-Can-Do-It! kind. Read it to find new sources of energy.

Amazing journey of recovery and self discovery

I very much enjoyed this read. In part 1 you will learn about the devastating accident and subsequent recovery from a traumatic motorcycle accident this provides a unique perspective on what it takes to get through something like this from the perspective of the victim and from their family. In part 2 Scott takes you on an incredibly gutsy and humorous journey as he commences post accident overseas solo travel and finds both his true love and his true calling.
