About The Author

The Country Women's Association of Australia has long been renowned for its work in support of rural families and communities, and for its members' cooking and catering. Their baked and bottled goods are must-see exhibits at local shows, and there are always long queues for the 'tea and scones' and other treats they serve up at many public functions. Their catering activities have made a huge contribution to the CWA's fundraising efforts.

I am in love with the recipes in this book. Not too keen on how chunky it is, but loving the updated photos and hard cover presentation.

Gorgeous book


Great book. Stunning to look at (yes looks good on the shelf) and flip through. The photographs are lovely - one huge page; but just of the finished dish (def not step by step etc). The book also expects some basic level cooking knowledge (I know its embarrassing I have to admit this) - some stuff I looked up online 'how to do' before realising there are detailed steps in other parts of the book. When a recipe only takes up less than a fifth of a page - disappointing the steps aren't within the recipes themselves. This is aimed at people who are confident and know what they are doing (I am just not that haha)...so flipping back and forth page to page for one recipe - for me - is the reason I cut one star off. Otherwise - if you aren't as basic a cook as myself it is a great reference and has lots of recipes you want to try. It would also make a fantastic gift. Despite the above - I am happy to have it - and see if I can unlock some of the secrets of the beautiful tasting goods the CWA often delivers!

I would give this book 10 stars|. It's very thick with a recipe per page and photos. I like that. I hate recipes that are crammed into one page. Most pages have a photo which is really helpful if you're not that confident in the end result. To sum up. It's a must for every kitchen. Solid foundational recipes which dont require you to be a rocket scientist to work them out. Lets go back to old fashioned cooking again. I luv this book so much I sent one to my daughter in Qld. who is absolutely thrilled. Very well put together. Thank you CWA|

No matter what your age, old or young, this collection of recipes lays an excellent foundation to be successful in the kitchen. I highly highly recommend this book. It's quite thick and chunky. Has many photos and the print is a decent size for an older person. Let's get back to the basics. I feel this is lacking these days with many recipes requiring so many ingredients, half of them sit in the fridge and cupboard and are never used again. I believe this book will build your confidence and create in You the successful cook you have wanted to become.



Amazing Cookbook


I have many cookbooks but I come back to this one all the time. There is a huge variety of recipes and they are simple to follow. Nice basic ingredients that you are likely to have in your cupboard. Every recipe I have tried (and there have been a lot) has been a winner. I liked this book so much I bought a copy for my daughter.





Wisdom of country cooks and their recipes are great but the format, being one thick tome, detracted from what could have been a useful kitchen reference. Too much space devoted to looking good, photos larger than necessary, wasted pages. I needed a book that sat open on the bench while I read from it. Broken down into 3 volumes, it would have been more practical. Some good old recipes that have stood the test of time.

Seeking a cookbook reference without frills, this fits the bill, but size and weight require a kitchen bench to support it; do not try to read this heavy tome in bed, do not drop it on your foot, and leave it on the bench. Made into 3 thinner volumes this publication would be more versatile, or putting it online in a searchable format would improve accessibility. Despite the physical negatives, it has many positives, being well laid out, with clear photographs. It is a great reference book.

The Country Women's Association of Australia has been in existence for more than 60 years and its members have long had a reputation for being wonderful cooks. Indeed, too often it seems that the public and the media think that our main activity is 'making tea and scones', though this is far from the case. But it is true that cooking and catering by our members, especially at local agricultural shows, have always been a major source of fundraising, enabling the CWA to raise many hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years, which has been used to support families and communities particularly in rural areas.

The recipes in this cookbook reflect the way in which our pioneer women used the simple ingredients they had to hand to make nutritious snacks, soups, stews, sweets and cakes, and would ensure their household had a year-round supply of jams, jellies and relishes by preserving fruit when it was in season. Some of these recipes are family favourites and have been handed down through the generations, being adapted along the way to suit the available ingredients and local conditions. Many members have also adopted and adapted 'new' foods introduced to Australia from other countries.

We are proud to be working with Penguin Books to bring you this fantastic collection and to be sharing with you our members' prized recipes. In so doing, once again CWA members are providing a valuable service to rural communities, as the royalties from this book will help us fund a postgraduate nursing scholarship. This is awarded to a nurse working in a rural area, allowing them to learn new skills and thus continue to provide an essential service to their community. The scholarship is of especial importance as we see the nation's health services struggling – in all parts of Australia, but particularly in rural communities where sometimes the nurse is the only health professional available. CWA sincerely thank Penguin for their support in the setting up of this scholarship through royalties already received from other titles (including the fi ve titles that have been brought together in this one volume: Cakes, Biscuits and Slices, Family Meals, Soups and Stews, and Preserves).
