Intense Media, LLC a local book publisher has just printed an anti-bullying book for parents, teachers, and children to help them understand how hurtful bullying can be. "Cornered!" is the first book that was printed from Intense Media's portfolio of nine apps that it currently offers. The focus of the apps and books are to encourage and empower kids for a healthy and fruitful life. CEO Nick Nebelsky, has teamed up with child advocate, Dr. Mike Perko, PhD., to produce a series of books and apps for kids that teach them common sense tools about how to cope with every day life. "There are a lot of educational titles out there for children from which to choose from that teach kids how to write and add numbers. We're not competing with them. Instead, we're creating a new category called life lessons. There is a lot of noise out there and we're willing to show how our books can help cut through that noise. These are the intangibles that can't be taught so easily. It's better to show a child a character that he can relate to that may be like himself. One that goes through hardships and every day problems. And then shows how the problem is dealt with," says Nebelsky. "Dr. Perko has written a nice rhyming book for children ages 4-8 that addresses one of the biggest stresses a child deals with, teasing and bullying. Our kids are our future and they need these life lessons to deal with life so they can grow into healthy young adults with great morals." Nebelsky added.Together, Nebelsky and Perko have created a cartoon character named Sheldon, the square-shelled turtle. He's a pretty normal turtle; he likes sports, music, and eating flies! But the one thing Sheldon doesn't think fair, is that while other turtles have round shells, Sheldon's shell, is, well, square! Perko wrote the first book, "Cornered!" in 2012, and Nebelsky penned the next book, Sheldon's Adventure. "Mike added so much to the story, that I made him a co-writer," Nebelsky said. The CEO also does all of the illustrations for the books and apps as well as the production layout for print and mobile devices. "Dr. Mike Perko, has previously written three books, and over 200 articles on health and fitness. He has appeared on ESPN and oh yea, he also teaches as an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the Department of Public Health. Mike is a passionate voice for all students. He has twice been recognized as teacher of the year and is a strong advocate in the healthy lives of children.
