A new approach towards the relationship between rifts and their pre-rift history has been presented in this study of continental rift formation, i.e., predetermination of inheritance of rift formation from previous history. The evolutionary processes of endogenetic regimes and destruction of continental crusts have been investigated and the stages of these processes have been reconstructed. Genetic relationship of rift formation with lateral chronologic order of magmatic formations of pre-rift stages have been established. Problems concerning structural control of iron, manganese and polymetallic deposits and zones of contemporary rift formation have been reviewed. It has been shown that rift formation is predetermined by prolonged periodic thermal activation of the mantle and ancient lithospheric inhomogeneities.
