Yonejiro Noguchi (1875â"1947), known in the West as Yone Noguchi, was an influential writer of poetry, fiction, essays, and literary criticism in both English and Japanese. He was the only Japanese author who published original literary works in English, and he gained a strong reputation in Western cultural society before the Second World War. Along with his active writings of literary works, which were collected in the first part of the series, he played a leading role by interpreting Japanese culture and arts to Western society in the early twentieth century. He extensively wrote and lectured in English. In particular, he devoted his English efforts to promote Ukiyoe and traditional arts of Japan, and published ten books which are all reprinted here together with many colour plates and other illustrations.
