Clay tobacco pipes have been produced in England since smoking became a popular pastime in the sixteenth century, and their widespread use over the next three hundred years means that their remains are ubiquitous across Britain. Until about 1890 they were as commonplace as the tankard of ale and the mug of tea, but competition from the briar pipe, the cigar and the cigarette brought the clay-pipe industry to an end around 1900. These old pipes are now highly desirable, and the enthusiastic collector is confronted by many questions. How old is it? How was it made? Where was it made?

The aim of this book is to answer these questions and to record the part the humble 'clay' once played in our society.
