This book offers a detailed discussion of Callimachus' collection of Iambi. The chapters on individual poems set out the evidence for the text; address questions of linguistic and antiquarian detail; attempt an interpretation of each poem as a whole; consider the arrangement of the poems, and the composition of the book. The author argues that the collection consisted of thirteen pieces; that the arrangement of the collection goes back to the poet himself, and that the Iambi are one of the earliest surviving poetry books. An attempt is made to relate this new form of poetic composition to the influence of scholarly interests and techniques on Hellenistic poetry in general, and on Callimachus in particular. The study includes a list of the papyri of the Iambi, and a list of new readings, supplements, conjectures, and other differences from Pfeiffer's text.

Industry Reviews

`In this book Kerkhecker creates a coherent and well-argued picture of the individual poems in Callimachus collection of Iambi and, at the end, of the whole collection. In his discussion of the poems he gives a good survey of the various interpretations and the scholarly discourse since Pfeiffer's edition, he looks critically at earlier ideas and in several instances offers attractive new solutions. The way in which he draws attention to the various speakers in the Iambi is often helpful for their interpretation. In his last chapter he presents a picture of the collection as a whole which I find largely convincing.' Gnomon `this book is an astonishing achievement for a young scholar.' Religious Studies Review, vol.27, no.3 `substantial contribution ... to the study of Callimachus' lambs ... Kerkhecker has made a substantial contribution to our understanding of both the individual lambs, the collection as whole, and its relationship to the wider context of Callimachean and Alexandrian poetry ... interesting and often compelling conclusions' James Clauss, bm reviews `this volume is a major contribution to the study of Hellenistic poetry and ought ... to lead to renewed interest in a whole raft of 'iambic questions'.' Richard Hunter, The Classical Rev. K. has now put us all in the debt of his enviable papyrological skills by setting out with exemplary clarity what we can and cannot know, and the parameters within which we must make our own decisions. K. weighs the textual possiblities with fine judgement ... and even the papyrologically challenged ought to be able to follow the broad thrust of most of the argument. `K. is ... also a stimulating literary critic of these poems. He is particularly strong on modulations of voice and levels of irony ... an outstanding piece of work.' Richard Hunter, The Classical Rev.
