The books we read as children are often Australian curriculum reading books, and they can quickly end up becoming fond childhood memories that we can share collectively.
These primary school reading resources and secondary school reading materials are usually chosen for their clear morals, their fun use of language, and their accessibility to children of all backgrounds. Of course, the Australian curriculum also tends to include numerous books by Australian authors, adding a fantastic local flair to school reading lists.

Popular Australian curriculum reading books
An ever-popular name for many primary school reading resources is Roald Dahl. This children’s author is beloved for his creative use of language, and creative approach to storytelling. And for kids, those stories are always on the fun side of scandalous. His book The Twits, is a classic example, filled with terrible characters doing terrible things, with misadventure and strong morals underlying it all.
Amongst the younger crowd, there are few series as popular right now as Mo Willems’ pigeon series. The Pigeon Wants a Puppy is just one example, in which the Pigeon decides it wants a puppy for its birthday and will not give anyone any peace until it gets what it wants. Other books in the series include The Pigeon HAS to go to School and Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!

One great Australian read for young kids is My Place, by Nadia Wheatley. This 20th anniversary edition offers a fresh look for a classic story, which takes the reader on a journey throughout Sydney’s history. It begins in 1788 and travels through to 1988, sharing stories of the children who have lived in the city throughout the centuries, and telling some of Australia’s past in the process.
Another great read is Tom Appleby Convict Boy. It’s the fictional tale of an eight-year-old English boy who is working as a chimney sweep when he is convicted of stealing and sent to Australia. He lands on his feet when he arrives, and works to build a life for himself as Australia develops as a colony. It’s a beautiful tale that invites the readers into Tom’s world, whilst sharing some of the country’s more colourful history.
