THE Book Of Five Rings was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Thomas Cleary's translation is immediately accessible, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi's text, Cleary translates here another important Japanese classic on leadership and strategy, THE BOOK OF FAMILY TRADITIONS ON THE ART OF WAR by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.

About the Author

Miyamoto Musashi, who lived in Japan in the 1600s, was an undefeated dueler, a masterless samurai, and an independent teacher. He spent the last decades of his life refining and teaching his military science.

Way of the Warrior is the Way of Life


On the surface, the Book of Five Rings seems merely to be a manual on swordsmanship, but the strategies of war and combat Musashi describes are shockingly straight-forward and could be applied in all areas of life. He stresses the importance of practice and mastery of all aspects in one's occupation, whether it be as a soldier or businessman. Just as a soldier would sharpen and practice with all the weapons of war, a businessman must persist in investigating and understanding the market and competition. Through mastering one's own way, the same principles can be applied in all other ways. Thomas Cleary presents a very direct and straight-forward translation, which wastes very little time. His short introduction provides context that is crucial in fully appreciating the text. Unlike the other English translators, Cleary chooses to translate certain Japanese martial art words in a way that could be roughly understood by the layman. A martial arts practitioner may not appreciate this, and instead opt for Harris' or Wilson's translations, but personally speaking, Cleary's is the most balanced and comprehensible book to the English speaker, and he does not add his own words to the main text, just as a certain "definitive interpretation" does.
