Thrust into the technology-driven Earthlands, Shahkara must find the ancient and legendary Elnara death lantern - the only thing that can save her homeworld from the heart-devouring Taloners.
She enlists the help of geeky billionaire Max McCalden, but soon finds that, as a half-Taloner herself, her blood demands what she knows she can't have - a human heart.
Shahkara longs for love, but as deadly enemies attack at every turn, will her lust for Max destroy them both?
Or will she find the strength to free both worlds from a threat more horrific than the demons that share her blood?
About the Author
I'm an Australian urban fantasy author who loves all things Young Adult, New Adult, Romantic and Spec Fic (big book and TV show fan). I grew up on an Australian farm - and wrote my first story on my aunt's bedroom wall when I was five but it didn't attract literary acclaim.I worked as an journalist for 15 years before trading my soul for fiction. I spend most of my day fighting with my cat Scamp who likes to laze on my office chair and keyboard, stopping me from writing stories about Taloners, witches and vamps. The Blood She Betrayed, a stand-alone book but also the first novel in the Heart Hunters series, is described by Vampire Diaries creator LJ Smith as "ingenious and unique".
Really strong characters with an interesting twist.
For a person who doesn't have time to read, especially those make-believe fantasy quests, I couldn't have started my literary journey with a more fascinating novel than The Blood She Betrayed. This was a first for me, but I was captivated by the uniqueness of this storyline - and its ever-building, ever-breathtaking suspense. Author Cheryse Durrant possesses that magical ability of creating imagery that heightens your senses and pips your curiosity. From the moment I read the first page, I was riveted and could not put it down. Each chapter held me captivated, as I yearned to know more about the beautiful, unwavering Shahkara and geeky billionaire Max, thrust together; each fighting their demons, but each searching for kindred love, unknowingly. Before long, you learn of the Taloners and their hunger for the human heart and then the feisty half-Taloners and what awaits their fate in this ever intriguing and unravelling plot. Can they save the Earthlands and Shahkara's homeworld before it is too late? The Blood She Betrayed ticks all the boxes you need for action-packed entertainment and heart-tugging romance. I couldn't help but visualise this compelling novel turned into a sweeping, dramatic three-dimensional film bursting across world cinema screens. In a nutshell, it has an intriguing and spell-binding plot; powerful and unique characters; drama and action with a twist of horror, romance and adventure, and supernatural themes that take your breath away. The Blood She Betrayed is a journey like no other, a journey I have walked and now I'm begging for more. I can't wait to return to the magic of Max and Shahkara, and their world of powerful, creepy Heart Hunters...
What a twist!! Mystery, quest, urban fantasy, humour, romance... this book has it all! From the very first pages, I couldn't put this book down until I had run out of words to read. Captivated by the vivid adventures of two young and very diverse protagonists- Max and Shakara - I had to keep turning the pages, following them through a series of intriguing twists, dangerous conflicts, burning lusts, consequences, betrayal, ordeals and triumphs. The plotline of this story is both incredibly and cruelly enthralling, with a rich mixture of fantasy and today's real world. The story-telling voice of Cheryse Durrant is by no means lacking in ruthless enchantment. I am very excited for this new and talented Australian author to bring a wild breath of fresh air to our shelves! I have read this book several times over now and cannot wait for the next book of the series. A definite recommendation to all.
The story of Shahkara immediately entertains with gritty action packed scenes and charming humour. There is instant frisson when Max, the heir to a fortune with a chip on his shoulder, literally collides with a 'leather scented Goth Angel' in a 'copper breastplate'. He thinks she's 'hot'. What he doesn't know yet, is she has talons. The Blood She Betrayed has all the other-worldly elements of a hero's journey: magic, demons, super human feats, unique characters, intrigue and betrayal, all played out in modern day Australia. Cheryse Durrant has created characters and settings that ooze ultimate cool. You will be engaged, surprised, and amused, gripped by your throat, flung to the floor, raised to the heights of triumph, and left gagging for the next installment.
Always on the lookout for new Australian authors, I thought The Blood She Betrayed might be worth a read. And I was right! Well written characters (where I actually cared about what happened to them!), great pace and really nice world development that kept me turning the pages. And some great twists thrown in just to keep things interesting - which is important... nothing worse than paying for a book and then having to slog through it to feel like you're getting your money's worth. Definitely not like that with this book - worth every cent! And just to top it all off, the ending was really satisfying. (Don't worry - no spoilers.) Another tick! Can't wait for the next one. Well done to a very talented author.
I read this book a few different times, and briefly went through it again today. It's a good read that stays interesting throughout. I love the character Shahkara and her interaction with Max. Cheryse keeps you wanting more and more with every turn of the page. I love the book and can't wait till more come out!!
