Ruth moved to Australia in 1942.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Her first novel was\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/the-harp-in-the-south-popular-penguins-ruth-park\/prod9780143202752.html\"><span class=\"s2\">The Harp in the South<\/span><\/a><\/em>, a graphic story of Irish slum life in Sydney, which has been translated into 37 languages. Even though it was acclaimed by literary critics, the book proved controversial with sections of the public due to its candour.
