The 17th Annual Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs), of course.<\/p>\n<p>Winners of the 2017 ABIAs were announced in a star-studded ceremony at the Art Gallery of NSW last night, awards that celebrate the very best in Australia\u2019s book industry.<\/p>\n<p>Di Morrissey, bestselling Australian author of twenty-four novels and numerous children\u2019s books, was inducted into the ABIA Hall of Fame with the Lloyd O\u2019Neil Award by former neighbour and long-time friend Tom Keneally.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-72898\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.booktopia.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/abia-3-people.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"654\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.booktopia.com.au\/2017\/05\/26\/tom-keneallys-heartfelt-tribute-di-morrissey\/\">heartfelt speech<\/a> outlining Di\u2019s thirty years in the book industry and philanthropic work \u2013 she built a school outside Mandalay in Myanmar &#8211; Tom voiced what all in the industry believe, \u201cYour success has made it possible for your publishers to undertake more Australian titles than they otherwise could. You have become an essential element in the ecology of publishing. The readers, booksellers and publishers love you, and this award confirms that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Literary agent Margaret Connolly was also inducted into the Hall of Fame, honoured with the Pixie O\u2019Harris Award that recognises excellence and dedicated service to Australian children\u2019s literature.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The Award Winners<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Gold ABIA for Book of the Year and Fiction Book of the Year went to Jane Harper for her internationally acclaimed novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/the-dry-jane-harper\/prod9781925481372.html\"><em>The Dry<\/em><\/a>, a haunting crime novel set in a drought-stricken rural Australia. This crowns a golden year for Jane after <em>The Dry<\/em> film option rights were snapped up by Reese Witherspoon\u2019s Pacific Standard, and publication rights sold in more than 20 territories after fierce auctions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/the-dry-jane-harper\/prod9781925481372.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-72925\" title=\"Jane Harper, author of The Dry\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.booktopia.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/JaneHarper.jpg\" alt=\"Jane Harper, author of The Dry\" width=\"654\" height=\"435\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not only performing on the night and giving an emotional first reading of his new memoir, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/jimmy-barnes-working-class-man-jimmy-barnes\/prod9781460752142.html\"><em>Working Class Man,<\/em><\/a> Australian rock icon, Jimmy Barnes, took home Biography of the Year for his memoir <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/working-class-boy-jimmy-barnes\/prod9781460752135.html\"><em>Working Class Boy<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While visiting Booktopia recently, Jimmy mentioned that writing this memoir was cathartic for him: \u201cIt was really great to get it out. Winners of the 2017 ABIAs were announced in a star-studded ceremony at the Art Gallery of NSW last night, awards that celebrate the very best in Australia\u2019s book industry. Di Morrissey, bestselling Australian author of twenty-four novels and numerous children\u2019s books, was inducted into the ABIA Hall of Fame with the Lloyd O\u2019Neil Award by former neighbour and long-time friend Tom Keneally. In a heartfelt speech outlining Di\u2019s thirty years in the book industry and philanthropic work \u2013 she built a school outside Mandalay in Myanmar &#8211; Tom voiced what all in the industry believe, \u201cYour success has made it possible for your publishers to undertake more Australian titles than they otherwise could. You have become an essential element in the ecology of publishing.
