I dived into this book safe in the knowledge that I was in good hands, and it didn’t disappoint. Last Night has everything we’ve come to expect from Mhairi: witty dialogue, palpable chemistry between characters, keen observations about life, love and loss, and a flawed but ultimately loveable female protagonist. What surprised me about this book was a new maturity and depth of emotion that I wasn’t expecting, that had me hooked from the first page. Mhairi McFarlane is the sort of author who keeps on growing and Last Night is her best yet.

Mhairi McFarlane

The story centres on Eve, a self-proclaimed goth in her mid-thirties, and her three best friends, Susie, Ed and Justin. They have been inseparable since school, with the added, unspoken complication of Eve being desperately in love with Ed for the better part of two decades. Eve is convinced Ed has feelings for her too, despite his long-term relationship with girlfriend Hester. Between Ed and her job, Eve has found herself in something of a rut. Everything changes for the friends when tragedy strikes and their world is turned upside down. The ripple effect of what happens that night stretches the length of the story, completely shaking up Eve’s world and changing everything she thought she knew.

Last Night is completely addictive and impossible to put down. Mhairi has the unique ability to make me cry and laugh out loud with one sentence, and although this book deals with more serious topics than her previous ones, she explores them with her familiar trademark snark and humour. I love the realistic way she approaches life and love, how she delves deep into the marrow of feelings between people, picking at things that are unpleasant or hard to look at. As an avid reader of romance and contemporary fiction, it is usually hard to surprise me, but this book successfully turns typical romance tropes on their head. I loved the way the story unfolds, how well we get to know the characters and how deeply we explore their changing relationships with each other.

Last Night will make you weep, but the moving and romantic story that unfolds is absolutely worth the tears. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed Mhairi’s past books, romance genre fanatics or anyone who enjoys contemporary fiction. Mhairi is one of the best.

—Last Night by Mhairi McFarlane (HarperCollins Australia) is out now.

‘Mhairi has the unique ability to make me cry and laugh out loud with one sentence.’

[6678
9850,1974,9192,12826,10610,4484,4577
