Hello everyone and welcome back to Amy in Romancelandia in a brand new sparkly year! I\u2019ve spruced up the joint for 2021 because it was looking very tired and down in the dumps thanks to the year that shall not be named. Barry White is crooning through the speakers, I\u2019ve hung a huge pi\u00f1ata full of chocolates from the ceiling and there are jugs of Sex on the Beach cocktails. And let\u2019s not forget, with Valentine\u2019s Day on the 14th, that February is the month of luuuurve<\/em>, so you can bet we are hot to trot here in the land of hearts and flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a quick recap for those who didn\u2019t join me last year, in case you\u2019re confused about what a romance novel actually is. A romance novel is a book that features a central romantic relationship \u2013 which does not have to be between a man or a woman or even two people for that matter – with an emotionally satisfying ending. We call them HEA\u2019s (Happily Ever Afters) although we can also get on board with a HFN (Happy for Now).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an extra treat each month, I recommend one of my fave reads to you, but this month it would be remiss of me not to, instead, pay tribute to the inimitable Emma Darcy \u2013 the doyen of the Australian romance writing community, who passed away aged 80 in December. She wrote 106 romance novels for Mills & Boon which sold 71 million copies worldwide and were among some of the first romance novels I ever read. Her books were translated into over twenty different languages and, she even dabbled in crime fiction, with her first book, Who Murdered Angelique?<\/em>, winning best first novel in the 2002 Ned Kelly Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I refer you to this article<\/a><\/strong> in the Sydney Morning Herald for a full list of her accomplishments but, from someone who knew her a little, I can tell you she was warm and generous and incredibly funny.
