His agent, Jonny Geller of Curtis Brown UK, revealed the news in a statement on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JonnyGeller\/status\/1338239733638508547?s=20&amp;utm_source=booktopian_blog&amp;utm_medium=booktopian&amp;utm_campaign=we_remember_john_le_carre\">Twitter<\/a><\/strong>, saying &#8216;John le Carr\u00e9 was an undisputed giant of English literature. He began to write spy thrillers under a pen name after being encouraged by fellow MI5 officer and novelist John Bingham, on whom he would base his most famous character &#8211; George Smiley.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Smiley first made an appearance in le Carr\u00e9&#8217;s 1961 debut, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/call-for-the-dead-john-le-carre\/book\/9780141198286.html?utm_source=booktopian_blog&amp;utm_medium=booktopian&amp;utm_campaign=we_remember_john_le_carre\">Call for the Dead<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, but fame was ensured with 1963&#8217;s <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/spy-who-came-in-from-the-cold-john-le-carre\/book\/9780241330920.html?utm_source=booktopian_blog&amp;utm_medium=booktopian&amp;utm_campaign=we_remember_john_le_carre\">The Spy Who Came In From the Cold<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, a book that garnered such high profile fans as the novelist Graham Greene. Smiley would go on to appear in a number of other popular spy novels, including <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/tinker-tailor-soldier-spy-john-le-carre\/book\/9780241323410.html?utm_source=booktopian_blog&amp;utm_medium=booktopian&amp;utm_campaign=we_remember_john_le_carre\">Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (1974), and made his final appearance in 2017&#8217;s <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/a-legacy-of-spies-john-le-carre\/book\/9780241981610.html?utm_source=booktopian_blog&amp;utm_medium=booktopian&amp;utm_campaign=we_remember_john_le_carre\">A Legacy of Spies<\/a><\/em><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John le Carr\u00e9 went on to write many other standalone novels over the span of his six-decade career, including <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/the-little-drummer-girl-john-le-carre\/book\/9780241359204.html?utm_source=booktopian_blog&amp;utm_medium=booktopian&amp;utm_campaign=we_remember_john_le_carre\">The Little Drummer Girl<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (1983), <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/the-night-manager-john-le-carre\/book\/9780141393018.html?utm_source=booktopian_blog&amp;utm_medium=booktopian&amp;utm_campaign=we_remember_john_le_carre\">The Night Manager<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (1993) and <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.booktopia.com.au\/the-constant-gardener-john-le-carre\/book\/9780241322307.html?utm_source=booktopian_blog&amp;utm_medium=booktopian&amp;utm_campaign=we_remember_john_le_carre\">The Constant Gardener<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (2001).
