Christina Henry is the author of the Chronicles of Alice duology, <\/em>Alice<\/a><\/strong> and<\/em> The Red Queen<\/a><\/strong>, a dark and twisted take on <\/em>Alice\u2019s Adventures in Wonderland, as well as <\/em>Lost Boy<\/a><\/strong>, an origin story of Captain Hook from <\/em>Peter Pan.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christina Henry is currently touring Australia for Supanova (more info on that here<\/a><\/strong>), and she’s on The Booktopian today to answer our Ten Terrifying Questions. Read on!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To begin with why don\u2019t you tell us a little bit about yourself \u2013 where were you born? Raised? Schooled?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I was born in Narnia, raised in Middle-Earth and schooled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.<\/p>\n\n\n

What did you want to be when you were twelve, eighteen and thirty? And why?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n

I always wanted to be a writer, even when I was very young. I spent most of my time living inside books and I wanted to stay there for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you do not have now?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

That The Smiths were the best band in the history of music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What were three works of art \u2013 book or painting or piece of music, etc \u2013 you can now say, had a great effect on you and influenced your own development as a writer?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Lord of the Rings<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Bloody Chamber<\/strong><\/a><\/em> by Angela Carter, and Rebecca<\/strong><\/a><\/em> by Daphne du Maurier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considering the innumerable artistic avenues open to you, why did you choose to write a novel?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I can\u2019t sing, dance, play an instrument or draw a straight line, but I know how to string words into a coherent sentence. I hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please tell us about your latest novel!<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Looking Glass<\/a><\/em><\/strong> is a collection of four linked novellas set in my Chronicles of Alice universe. One story is about Alice\u2019s sister, Elizabeth; one story is about young Hatcher; two stories are about Alice and Hatcher\u2019s adventures post-Red Queen<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do you hope people take away with them after reading your work?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Every reader\u2019s experience of a book is different, so I think every reader takes away something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who do you most admire in the realm of writing and why?<\/strong> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I admire any writer that can stick with this profession. It can be incredibly frustrating and gruelling, but at the same time one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many artists set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

My goal is always to finish the book I\u2019m currently writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Strangely, I find that the more I write, the less qualified I feel to give advice. The best I can say is find your own way \u2013 people will try to tell you that writing a book must be done \u201cx\u201d way or \u201cy\u201d way but the only right way is the one that gets you to finish your story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
