Snyder is fine by me! In fact, it’s more than fine. I’m usually desperate to get my hands on it. Why? Because I know that I’m in for a fun and wild ride. Her new book, Chasing the Shadows, is no exception.

Maria V. Snyder

For me, it’s all about Snyder’s characters. In every single book of hers that I’ve read, they leap off the page at me. Lyra is such a funny and diverting character. Her quick wit and playful outlook on life often has me laughing out loud, especially considering the serious situations she gets herself into – I’m surprised she’s able to keep such a positive and energetic mindset!

This is book two in Snyder’s Sentinels of the Galaxy series and things definitely do NOT slow down. If you haven’t read the first book, Navigating the Stars, stop reading this review now and go pick up a copy! There be spoilers here.

In Chasing the Shadows, Lyra and the gang are still reeling after all the epic events that ended book one – a cliffhanger that had me going O.o

Lyra is much changed after her ‘short death’ (sixty-six seconds to be precise). With a new name to keep her safe and a new job as a rookie member of the security team, Lyra – or Ara – knows she must stay dead if she’s to keep safe from Jarren, the murdering looter.

So precedes a fantastic game of cat and mouse. It’s Jarren versus Lyra. Who is the better Wormer? Lyra finds her skills in the Q-net are growing dramatically but Jarren’s worming skills keep her on her toes for the whole book. All the while, Lyra’s attitude is very much like:

I don’t want to give too much away but Jarren’s evil plot continues to unfold – evil plots are never simple, right? Lyra and the gang are trapped in a technological silence because all of their communications are being blocked by Jarren, meaning that the rest of the galaxy might start to suspect they’re all dead.

Tensions run high throughout this entire book. Alongside trying to figure out Jarren’s next moves, Lyra is developing her blossoming relationship with Niall, trying to reassure her parents after her death and training to be a security officer, all while trying to solve head-scratching mysteries.

The Warriors, the HoLFs, the Q-net… I feel like Snyder has placed me on the edge of a cliff and I’m about to topple over. I can’t wait to find out what this all means!

[34
10653,3506,4484,4737,10654,6649
