Scarlett St. Clair is a citizen of the Muscogee Nation and the author of the Hades X Persephone saga, When Stars Come Out and the brand new book, King of Battle and Blood. She has a Master’s degree in Library Science and Information Studies and a Bachelors in English Writing. She is obsessed with Greek Mythology, murder mysteries, and the afterlife. If you are obsessed with these things, then you’ll like her books.
Today, Scarlett St. Clair is on the blog to take on our Ten Terrifying Questions! Read on …
1. To begin with, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself – where were you born? Raised? Schooled?
I was born and raised in a small town in Eufaula, Oklahoma. I attended school there until I graduated in 2008 when I headed off to college at the University of Oklahoma where I graduated in 2012 with a degree in English Writing and then in 2014 with a Masters in Library Science.
2. What did you want to be when you were twelve, eighteen and thirty? And why?
When I was twelve, I think I still wanted to be some kind of scientist because I was good at science, but by the time I was thirteen I read The Lord of the Rings and that began my obsession with writing and becoming a world-famous author, which I wanted to be at eighteen and thirty—and still today at thirty-one. HA.
3. What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you don’t have now?
Looool. For some reason, I believed that drinking alcohol—socially, moderately, in any form was bad. I don’t even know why, I just did … and now I’m over it. Wine for days.
4. What are three works of art – this could be a book, painting, piece of music, film, etc – that influenced your development as a writer?
The Lord of the Rings started my obsession with becoming an author and while there was no particular song that inspired me completely, music is a huge source of inspiration for me. Then I’d have to say the last ‘work of art’ to inspire me is actually the romance genre as a whole. Once you begin your journey through it, you find all sorts of women in empowering roles. It’s really fantastic.
5. Considering the many artistic forms out there, what appeals to you about writing a novel?
I think I chose writing because my life was changed by words and I decided that’s what I wanted to do, too.
‘There are vampires, magic, and a lot of spice and I’m so excited to share it with the world!’
6. Please tell us about your latest novel!
My upcoming novel is called King of Battle and Blood and it’s a high fantasy romance about a princess named Isolde who agrees to marry her greatest enemy to protect her kingdom. There are vampires, magic, and a lot of spice and I’m so excited to share it with the world!
7. What do you hope people take away with them after reading your work
I’ve always said I did not think I could change the world writing romance, but now I’m certain I can and that’s what I intend to do.
8. Who do you most admire in the writing world and why?
I admire women like those on my Sourcebooks Team who are innovating to change the industry.
9. Many artists set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?
Did I mention I want to take over the world? HAHA.
10. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
When someone tells you no, find a way to yes—that doesn’t mean you keep going back to the person who told you no. It means finding a way to achieve the goal you wanted to achieve.
Thank you for playing!
