Like most people, you might find yourself glued to your smartphone, tablet, laptop or eReader as the evening winds down. After all, it’s our time to leisurely catch up on reading, social media feeds or browse online as a way to relax. By now, it’s been drilled into us that using electronics before bed time isn’t conducive to a good night’s sleep, and over a long period of time, can have detrimental effects on our health.

The culprit of our poor night’s sleep? The bright backlight emitted by our devices tricking our brain into thinking it’s daytime and impacting our body’s natural sleep system.

But you’re not the only one experiencing a bad night’s sleep. In fact, a sleep report commissioned by sleep technology company Emma has revealed that two-thirds (66%) of Australians struggle to sleep.

Thankfully, with Kobo eReaders, you don’t have to give up your nighttime reading habits in order to get a restful night’s sleep. Instead, you can use it to your advantage to help you relax before you go to bed.

Here are a couple of tips to make your Kobo eReader your perfect night time companion.

1. Let the clever ComfortLight or ComfortLight PRO in your Kobo eReader adjust your screen’s brightness

It should come as no surprise that 98% of people said they bring technology into the bedroom, using social media in bed, watching TV or Netflix or using dating apps from the comfort of their bed. While it’s likely we won’t kick these tech habits to the curb, there are some ways we can limit its harm.

On your Kobo eReader, you’ll find either the built-in ComfortLight or ComfortLight PRO feature, where you can adjust the brightness and colour of the screen yourself or choose to have it automatically adjust for you depending on your environment.

ComfortLight allows you to precisely control your screen’s brightness for comfortable bedtime reading, while ComfortLight PRO limits the amount of blue light exposure at night so you’re not kept alert the same way you need to during the day. Limiting blue light from the eReader’s screen also makes it more comfortable for your eyes when you read in low light or in the dark.

If you sleep next to someone, there’s even better news! Now, your sleep won’t be disrupted by the bright light from their device. You can control the brightness right from your fingertips.

ComfortLight is a built-in feature in Kobo Nia. ComfortLight PRO is a built-in feature in Kobo Clara HD, Kobo Libra H20, and Kobo Forma.

2. Add eReading to your bedtime routine

Did you know that 37% of Aussies lie in bed not being able to relax or sleep? One of the simplest and most enjoyable solutions in the book (pun intended) to getting quality sleep is to … read!

While it’s tempting to scroll endlessly on your phone, picking up a good book and reading a few pages or chapters is one of those activities that helps your brain unwind while still providing a great source of entertainment before bedtime.

Allow your mind to be transported elsewhere while reading a good book – it’s a low stimulating activity that gives you some time to relax.

And if you’re still struggling to get a good night’s sleep, here are some suggested reads available on the Booktopia eBook store:
