Whether you’re just starting out or are an experienced gardener, this book is packed with insights that will support you in your growing journey.

We are delighted to share with you our love for gardening, and the pleasure of eating home-grown food. We have taken all our knowledge and experience from years of working and learning as organic market gardeners, and are incredibly excited to offer it to you in this comprehensive book about regenerative home gardening.

We love making gardening accessible, fun, and attainable for as many people as possible. Over the years, we have taught the art of organic and regenerative vegetable gardening (both home gardening and organic market gardening) to thousands of people, which has helped us to identify what information gardeners might find useful and relevant. Every chapter in the book is written with you in mind, as we demystify what is involved in creating and maintaining a productive and regenerative vegetable garden.

‘We work with nature, enhancing the soil life and fertility, and providing plants with what they need to thrive.’

Since we started our gardening journey in 2005, we have studied and practised permaculture, regenerative farming and homesteading. We have experimented with a variety of gardening techniques, eventually leading to the systems we use today. The information we share in this book is based on our experience working with nature, enhancing the soil life and fertility, and providing plants with what they need to thrive. The information is also grounded in the latest scientific research on soil health and ecological and regenerative practices. Vegetable gardening in this way repeatedly demonstrates that every loved garden bed can produce high-yielding, resilient, nourishing and delicious vegetables year after year.

In 2014, our family was privileged to join Jeanette Fitzsimons and Harry Parke at Pakaraka Farm, an organic farm in the Kauaeranga Valley, Thames, Aotearoa New Zealand. Here at this beautiful spot, we established the Pakaraka Permaculture Market Garden and Education Centre for Regenerative Living, with the burning desire to feed our community with the best food we can grow and share this knowledge with other keen gardeners. Our market garden is a diversified organic operation, producing over 8500 kg (18,700 lb) of fresh produce a season from a quarter acre of land.

This book provides simple, reliable strategies and techniques, covering all aspects of home gardening to maximise your ability to feed yourself and share the abundance with those around you. We cover all of our favourite crops, and you will find helpful charts with the information you need to plan and plant your garden year-round. We have also included a chapters on microgreens and on our favourite recipes for ferments, preserves and pickles so you can stock the pantry with your garden’s bounty.

Our gardening approach seeks to improve the garden and soil ecosystems with every season, contributing to biodiversity, carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change while producing increasing yields and healthier crops. We strongly believe that growing food at home does more than increase your food resilience and provide delicious produce. Regenerative gardening is one of the most meaningful actions communities and individuals can take to combat climate change as well as supporting your mental and physical wellbeing.

We hope this book will be a useful companion throughout your gardening journey. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Pakaraka Permaculture, and visit our website at pakarakafarm.co.nz to stay up to date with our news.
