Caroline Hirons is a globally qualified advanced aesthetician. Her career has involved developing bespoke facials and training teams internationally for top brands in the UK, USA and Far East. She has been in retail for 34 years, and working as a consultant to brands in the beauty industry for over ten years, advising brands on the route into market, where they should be selling and why. She has the biggest social media following across all channels in beauty and skincare, and currently runs her own beauty and lifestyle blog.
Today, Caroline is on the blog to answer a few of our questions about her first book, Skincare. Read on!
Tell us about your book!
CH: It’s called Skincare and is published on June 26th. It’s a no-nonsense guide to everything you need to know. I’ve taken everything I’ve learned from my years in the industry and talking to readers of the blog every day to help you navigate the world of skincare. Simply and succinctly, it’ll tell you what you do and don’t need, and where not to waste your time and energy. If I rave about a product or an ingredient, it’s because I know it genuinely works. Plus, it’s bright yellow and covered in camouflage. What’s not to love?
Why is skincare important to you?
CH: It’s important to me because skincare is self-care.
What inspired you to write this book? How did you find the writing and publication process?
CH: I put my heart and soul into my book. But everything about writing the book has been … different. It was the first time in ten years that anyone except me had edited anything I’d written. That was a ‘challenge’, to say the least.
Can you tell us a little bit about your journey to becoming an aesthetician and skincare blogger?
CH: The last 10 years has been primarily focused on my brand and retail consulting business and unexpected success of my blog, which has over 125 million views to date. I’ve been in the industry for 23 years, starting on the shop floor and then progressing to qualified facialist and international director of spa, sales and so on. My passion was always skincare. I love make-up, but I’m obsessed with skincare. 10 years ago I set up my blog carolinehirons.com just to have somewhere to talk about things I like. There was no plan, I just thought I’d have a go. 125 million page views later, my debut book is about to be released.
What’s your golden rule or guiding philosophy when it comes to skincare?
CH: Use good basics and excellent actives. Meaning: if budget takes priority, you can buy affordable cleansers and moisturisers in any chemist or supermarket, but if you can, be a little more spendy in the middle. Serums are where you get your true active products, and they are by their very nature, more expensive.
In your opinion, what’s the biggest skincare myth that needs busting?
CH: The biggest skincare myth is that you can shrink your pores. Alcohol-based toners (which dehydrate your skin and should be avoided) can make them look smaller temporarily but closing them is impossible.
What do you love the most about being a skincare blogger?
CH: My readers and the community it’s created – it’s a place where people can say they feel bad about their skin without anyone judging. People send me pictures of their skin saying, ‘Look at me now, thank you for your advice.’ When I was doing facials, some clients would come to my clinic and cry, because they felt I was the first person to take them seriously. I don’t do facials anymore; although I keep my training updated, I can reach far more people through my blog and now the book.
Do you have any social isolation skincare tips to share?
CH: You should adapt your skin routine every day depending on your skins needs. For me personally, lockdown has caused my skin to be dehydrated – people think make-up is bad for their skin but it’s another layer of protection from central heating and airless houses … I’m spritzing and moisturising three or four times a right and it just disappears.
What do you hope readers will discover in Skincare?
CH: While you can expect my straight talking, no nonsense approach, I hope it will be clear that my only intention is for everyone to have the skin they want. I’ll cut out the jargon, tell you what you do and don’t need and hopefully get the nation off face wipes for good.
And finally, what’s up next for you?
CH: Watch this space … 😉
Thanks Caroline!
