After teasing fans with a mysterious countdown on her website, Stephenie Meyer has announced the release of a new Twilight Saga novel and it suddenly feels like 2008 all over again.
And not just any Twilight novel – Meyer is releasing Midnight Sun, the re-telling of the first book from Edward Cullen’s perspective that she intended to release 12 years ago, before the full manuscript leaked online and publication was cancelled.
You don’t have to have been a 15 year-old girl during the height of the Twilight craze (ahem) to realise just how big of a deal this is. The vampire romance saga catapulted young adult fiction into the spotlight in a way that is truly rare, while also igniting fierce debate about its portrayal of romantic relationships for young women. Nevertheless, nearly 160 million copies of the books have been sold worldwide to date, with over 4.1 million copies sold in Australia, and a five-part film series starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson wrapped up in 2012.
In her announcement, Stephenie Meyer said:
“It feels strange to be making this announcement when the world is suffering through a pandemic, and no one really knows what’s next. I thought seriously about delaying this announcement until things were back to normal; however, that felt wrong, considering how long those who are eager for this book have already waited. I know how much I personally need distractions right now, how much I need something to look forward to, and most of all, how much I need more books to read. So, I hope this book gives my readers a little pleasure to anticipate and, after it arrives, a chance to live in an imaginary world for a while. I can’t express how much I appreciate the patience of my readers, and their support over the years it took to finish Midnight Sun.”
I cannot believe I am writing this in 2020, but the Twilight Renaissance is nigh. Get ready.
—Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer (Hachette Books Australia) will be published on the 5th of August, 2020.
