The River Home is the new novel from Hannah Richell and it tells the story of Margot, Lucy and Eve, three very different sisters brought up by their unconventional writer parents on a modest country estate. Now grown, they are each grappling with life issues that threaten to derail them and are keeping secrets they are each fearful of revealing.

Like the river that runs by their childhood home, the waters may seem calm and comforting on the surface, yet underneath are hidden swells that can also threaten and drag you under.

Now, with Lucy’s hastily announced wedding, they are reunited with each other and their separated parents for the first time in many years. Whilst obviously loving each other, in a matter of days before the nuptials, their secrets, resentments, misunderstandings and obstacles to happiness will all surface like flotsam does from a river and, as a family, must be faced head-on.

Richell writes that we all carry pain but that “there is braveness in living … There is strength in carrying on.” Having faced her own life challenges and tragedy, this is an author with a deep understanding about what she writes, something which only adds to the resounding authenticity of the sympathetic characters and their challenges.

This touching story of mystery and, ultimately, resilience and resolve will resonate with readers and reaffirm the notion of acceptance, love and the strength of family ties.
