Margaret Fulton, one of Australia’s most beloved food writers, has died aged 94. Her death was confirmed by her granddaughter Kate Gibbs in a statement made to delicious:
“The family of Margaret Fulton are today mourning the loss of their loving, inspirational and treasured mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.”
Called the “original domestic goddess” by Bulletin, Margaret Fulton was born on 6 October, 1924, in Scotland and moved to Australia aged 3. She began her prosperous career in food as a cooking teacher in 1947, and would go on to write over 25 cookbooks, serve as the food editor for Women’s Day, and host her own primetime TV cooking show.
Margaret cemented her enthusiastic brand of quick and easy home cooking with the publication of The Margaret Fulton Cookbook in 1968, with individual chapters on fish, poultry, meat, vegetables, soups, salads, pasta and rice, desserts and cakes. It went on to sell over 1.5 million copies and it remains something of a food bible for many Australians. Last year, it celebrated its 50th anniversary in print.
A love of travelling lead Margaret to discover the delights of Chinese and Italian food, and she is considered a pioneer for multi-cultural cooking who irrevocably changed Australia’s culinary landscape. She is acknowledged as a staunch advocate for the introduction of international cuisines into the repertoire of the average Aussie household cook.
Margaret was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1983 in “recognition of service to the media as a journalist and writer in the field of cookery.”
A true national treasure and cookery icon, Margaret Fulton will be dearly missed.
