Bruce Pascoe is releasing Dark Emu for kids!

by |May 23, 2019

Bruce Pascoe’s bestselling book Dark Emu is a truly revelatory read.

A historical account of Aboriginal Australia and the birth of agriculture, it shone a light on aspects of indigenous existence that we never knew about until now.

Bruce used first-hand accounts of the early European colonists, explorers, and farmers to argue that we should reconsider the hunter-gatherer label that we have given the pre-colonial inhabitants of this land. In doing so, he stripped back history so that we can see Australia as it once was.

It was a land of cultivated agricultural land and fisheries, where its people lived in permanent homes and had a thoughtful relationship with the land and its resources – a far cry from the land of terra nullius.

There’s been scarcely a week since its publication that Dark Emu hasn’t occupied a spot on our Top 10 non-fiction bestseller list, and now Bruce Pascoe has distilled that wonderful book into a junior edition.

Young Dark Emu brings together the meticulous research and compelling first person accounts of Dark Emu in a way that’s educational and digestible for younger readers, opening up his discoveries to a whole new generation.

A Truer History

by Bruce Pascoe

Bruce Pascoe has collected a swathe of literary awards for Dark Emu and now he has brought together the research and compelling first person accounts in a book for younger readers.

Using the accounts of early European explorers, colonists and farmers, Bruce Pascoe compellingly argues for a reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer label for pre-colonial Aboriginal Australians. He allows the reader to see Australia as it was before Europeans arrived — a land of cultivated farming areas, productive fisheries, permanent homes, and an understanding of the environment and its natural resources that supported thriving villages across the continent. Young Dark Emu — A Truer History asks young readers to consider a different version of Australia’s history pre-European colonisation.
