Booktopia celebrates 15 years!

by |February 7, 2019

It’s our Birthday!

2019 marks 15 years since Booktopia was founded back in 2004. At that time, it took 3 days for the company to sell its first book. After the first month we had made $2,000 in sales. Now 15 years later, Booktopia has sold $550 million of books, DVDs and more. We now sell one item every 6.1 seconds and have more than 1.8 million repeat customers — an incredible result for an Australian company that started out on a budget of $10 a day!

In 2009 Booktopia moved to a 2,000 square metre location in Lane Cove. In 2014, we moved again, this time into a 10,000 square metre Distribution Centre in Lidcombe (now expanded to 13,500 square metres). Since then, we have continued to grow, with Angus & Robertson Bookworld becoming part of the Booktopia family in 2015 and the founding of Booktopia Publishing Services in 2018.

“It has been a humbling experience and a true privilege to be part of the team going from its origins to where it is today.” – Booktopia CEO, Tony Nash

Booktopia is the only company ever to make the AFR/BRW Fast 100 for 8 years in a row from 2009 to 2017. In 2018, Booktopia was named NSW Business of the Year at the Telstra Business Awards. We were also voted Best Pureplay Online Retailer at the 2018 Online Retailer Industry Awards.

The past 15 years have been an incredible journey of rapid growth and exciting change. We now have over 200 staff members and keep over 150,000 different titles in stock and ready to ship.

As we enter 2019, we are all incredibly excited to continue our journey as Australia’s largest online independent bookstore. Of course, we wouldn’t be here without the support of our wonderful customers, publishers and suppliers. We are proud to be a part of the vibrant and creative community that is the Australian Book Industry.

Please join us in celebrating 15 years. Happy Birthday Booktopia!
