The cover has been revealed for The Freedom Artist by award-winning author Ben Okri.
Described as the most significant novel since Orki’s Man Booker winning, The Famished Road, The Freedom Artist is about a young woman arrested for speaking the following four words …. who is the prisoner?
In the world of The Freedom Artist nobody sleeps well, not those who scream without knowing why, or those who listen to them. It’s a world where oppression stalks the streets and people disappear. And at the heart of it lies the terrible prison.
It needs an exceptional person, an unexpected person, to lead the call for freedom, and it needs everyone to wake up and listen.
This is a modern classic shouting out for freedom and, above all, for change. You’ll recognise this world. It’s already familiar to too many people.
The Freedom Artist is set to be published on the 21st of January 2019. Behold the striking cover art below –
About the Author
Ben Okri was born in Minna, Nigeria. His childhood was divided between Nigeria, where he saw first hand the consequences of war, and London. He has won many prizes over the years for his fiction, and is also an acclaimed essayist, playwright, and poet.
Praise for Ben Okri:
‘Okri is incapable of writing a boring sentence. As one startling image follows the next, The Famished Road begins to read like an epic poem that happens to touch down just this side of prose … When I finished the book and went outside, it was as if all the trees of South London had angels sitting in them’ – Linda Grant, Independent on Sunday.
‘Okri’s writing has a light-as-air elegance, yet its seriousness keeps the stories gravity-bound’ – New Statesman.
‘In a magnificent feat of sustained imaginative writing, Okri spins a tale that is epic and intimate at the same time’ – Michael Palin.
‘This is a book to generate apostles. People will be moved and, with stars in their eyes, will pass on the word’ – Time Out.
The Freedom Artist
An impassioned plea for freedom and justice, set in a world uncomfortably like our own.
In Ben Okri's most significant novel since the Man Booker-winning The Famished Road , a young woman is arrested for speaking four simple words – Who is the Prisoner?
This question resonates throughout the novel, and by the end it has become the question every reader has to ask themselves. The answer is implicit in the revelation at the heart of the story.
After her disappearance, a man begins to search for the woman, because he loves her. He searches desperately at first, and then with growing realization. And we journey with him as he searches, through a frightening, disintegrating world of lies, and violence, and fear. At the heart of this disturbing world lies the Prison. To survive, and to answer the girl's question, the young man, like all of us, has to accept the challenge and fight back.
The Freedom Artist is a penetrating examination of how freedom is threatened in a post-truth society. It's a powerful call to arms.
