The Bachelor: Recommended Reading List

by |August 20, 2018

The Bachelor is back and suddenly all our social media feeds are flooded with wonderful and ridiculous Bachie-related nonsense!

This year’s Bachelor is former rugby union player Nick Cummins (AKA The Honey Badger) and the season has kicked off with an a explosive start . So far, among other things, we’ve had the surprise appearance of an ex-girlfriend, a home invasion and some rather scintillating conversation about the dangers of eating jalapenos (ring stingers!!). Oh, and Osher! The ever-amazing Osher Günsberg’s first appearance this season was accompanied by a truly spectacular chorus of chanting that I would really like to see replicated in all future episodes please.

All in all, I expect (and sincerely hope) things are going to get more fantastically crazy from this point onward.

And now for our recommended reading list! If you are deep into the new season of The Bachelor and looking for some books to read to help fuel your obsession, we’ve got a list of books that are either a) written by the current Bachelor, b) written by former Bachelors, c) written by Osher!!!, and d) written by Rosie Waterland (AKA the best recapper who ever recapped this gloriously insane show and original coiner of the term “Bachie”.)

We’ve also selected a bunch of books that really revel in all the drama, romance, betrayal, manipulation and scandal that have made The Bachelor so popular.

Enjoy!

Back, After the Break
by Osher Günsberg

Osher Günsberg, one of Australia’s most loved celebrities, opens up in a powerful, dark, funny and heart-wrenching memoir about life, love and living with mental illness.

It’s hard to remember a time when Osher Günsberg (or Andrew G as he was then) wasn’t on TV – he’s just always been there, looking at ease in the spotlight, beaming a big smile, with a questionable haircut. He was there hanging out with The Offspring backstage at the Warped Tour on Channel V; announcing to a national audience of three million people that Guy Sebastian was our first Australian Idol; and later capturing the heart of the nation by hosting every season of The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and now Bachelor in Paradise.

But while everything looks great from the outside, the real picture has not always been quite so rosy. Osher has always known … read more.

More than one of the contestants in this season of The Bachelor has referred to Nick Cummins as “a project. In this scenario, I guess Nick Cummins is the Eliza Dolittle and the women who see him as a “project” are casting themselves in the role of Henry Higgins. Lets see how this all plays out, shall we? I’ll be watching with a bowl of popcorn!

Pygmalion
by George Bernard Shaw

A barbed attack on the British class system, Pygmalion both delighted and scandalized its first audiences in 1914. Henry Higgins is the Pygmalion figure who believes he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl, into a duchess at ease in polite society. The one thing he overlooks is that his ‘creation’ has a mind of her own.

I mean … do I really need to explain the connection here? I think secretly all of us are hoping that eventually the contestants of The Bachelor will be pitted against one another in a Hunger Games style fight to the death. Or is that just me?

The Hunger Games
by Suzanne Collins

Set in a dark vision of the near future, a terrifying reality TV show is taking place. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live event called The Hunger Games. There is only one rule: kill or be killed. When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her younger sister’s place in the games, she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before … read more.

If what attracts you to The Bachelor is all the complex manipulative mind games and backstabbing betrayals that can go on between contestants – all the delicious scandal, seductions and controversy then Les Liaisons Dangereuses (AKA Dangerous Liaisons) is the book for you!

Les Liaisons Dangereuses
by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos

The complex moral ambiguities of seduction and revenge make Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782) one of the most scandalous and controversial novels in European literature. Its prime movers, the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil–gifted, wealthy, and bored–form an unholy alliance and turn seduction into a game. And they play this game with such wit and style that it is impossible not to admire them, until they discover mysterious rules that they cannot understand. In the ensuing battle there can be no winners … read more.

Dead Famous
by Ben Elton

One house. Ten contestants. Thirty cameras. Forty microphones.

Yet again the public gorges its voyeuristic appetite as another group of unknown and unremarkable people submit themselves to the brutal exposure of the televised real-life soap opera, House Arrest.

Everybody knows the rules: total strangers are forced to live together while the rest of the country watches them do it. Who will crack first? Who will have sex with whom? Who will the public love and who will they hate? All the usual questions. And then, suddenly, there are some new ones … read more.

When you think about it, most seasons of The Bachelor tend to play out a little bit like
A Midsummer Night’s Dream. All the hilarious romantic highjinks, the complicated machinations of fairies with love spells gone awry and craziness galore … only to wrap everything up with a wonderful happy ending! Yep. Every season of The Bachelor basically follows Shakespeare blueprint for madcap romantic comedy.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
by William Shakespeare

‘If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended: That you have but slumbered here While these visions did appear’

A young woman, Hermia, flees ancient Athens with her lover, only to be pursued by her would-be husband and her best friend. Unwittingly, all four find themselves in an enchanted forest where fairies and sprites take an interest in human affairs, dispensing magical love potions and casting mischievous spells. In one of Shakespeare’s most perennially popular comedies, slapstick collides with courtly romance and confusion ends in harmony, as love is transformed, misplaced and ultimately restored.
