Meet Charlie! He is the son of our Pricing & Inventory Strategist, Kirsty. Charlie is a long-time fan of the Jack West Jr series by Matthew Reilly and is one of the first people to have read an advance copy of the upcoming 5th book in the series, The Three Secret Cities.
“Since discovering Harry Potter at age 10, my eldest son Charlie, now 16-years-old, has cost me a small fortune in books,” says Kirsty, “It’s got to the point where I really can’t afford to leave the book industry for fear of not being able to fund his habit!”
Kirsty goes on to explain that Charlie is a binge reader. He can’t just read a chapter here or there, he reads morning noon and night until he finishes a book. Kirsty is constantly challenged to find Charlie new books to read, especially in the school holidays. She worries if she doesn’t supply him with enough books that she will lose him to the world of YouTube and gaming.
“I was so happy when an advanced copy of the new Matthew Reilly book arrived at work,” says Kirsty. ” Charlie is such a huge fan!”
Charlie devoured The Three Secret Cities over the school holidays and was kind enough to share his thoughts with us …

The Three Secret Cities
Jack West Jr: Book 5
by Matthew Reilly
We say hello to old friends and return to the world of Jack West Jr in Matthew Reilly’s new novel The Three Secret Cities.
This book is exciting and action-packed – exactly what I’ve come to expect from Matthew Reilly. It drew out strong emotions while I was reading, to the point where, at times, I had to put it down and just walk away. It made me feel sad, angry and incredibly excited for what was to come – to the point that I couldn’t focus so I would just give myself some time to gather my thoughts before continuing.
I found that I was constantly asking myself, “How are they going to get out this one?” owing to Reilly’s ability to come up with the most inventive and impossible situations for his characters, so it seems like they will never survive. He has a great ability to create suspense, but still imbue hope in the readers. Overall, I’m really looking forward to the next installment.
The narrative of the book is engaging from the start, picking up right where the last one left off and quickly moving into the main events of the book. I found that the plot had some parallels to one of Reilly’s other books, Scarecrow, which I really enjoyed, but there were also a lot of unique features that made it quite different. I enjoyed the book so much that I read it easily in two days.
Ultimately, this latest book was a lot of fun to read and I would recommend to anyone who enjoyed the other Jack West books.
The Three Cities is coming out on the 30th of October but is available to Pre-order now!
