A.C. Grayling: We recognise that anything human is imperfect.

by |September 26, 2017

Booktopia welcomed philosopher and author A.C. Grayling to chat about his latest book Democracy and Its Crisis, which was prompted by events in recent years in the UK and the USA, in Latin America, Russia and the Middle East.

He investigates why the institutions of representative democracy seem unable to sustain themselves against forces they were designed to manage, and why it matters.

“We’ve got to know our history because if we don’t, we’re going to make those mistakes again.” – A.C. Grayling

“To read reflectively and intelligently teaches you a great deal about the diversity of human nature.” – A.C. Grayling

In each of five short chapters, he considers a moment in history in which the challenges we face today were first encountered, how they were overcome – or not – and with what consequences.

For a limited time, we have signed copies of Democracy and Its Crisis available online, but hurry because they won’t last! Booktopia’s John Purcell had the pleasure of chatting with A.C. about this latest thought-provoker. Have a listen here:

About the Contributor

Before entering the exciting world of books, Bronwyn served in the Royal Australian Air Force, travelled extensively and worked (still does!) as a barista on the weekends. Books are her true passion. Bronwyn's debut fantasy novel Relic is coming out in 2019 with indie publishing house Talem Press. They are to publish her entire trilogy called The Relic Trilogy. In her spare time, Bronwyn writes, reads and enjoys keeping fit (which she undoes by eating loads of chocolate) with Martial Arts and personal training. She can't answer what her favourite book is but she has a soft spot for Peter Pan (J.M Barrie), Outlander (Diana Gabaldon), Stardust (Neil Gaiman), The Illuminae Files (Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman) and Six of Crows (Leigh Bardugo). Fantasy, sci-fi and YA make up the majority of her bookshelves.
