Debbie Malone is an acclaimed spirit medium who has assisted police departments across Australia in missing persons and murder investigations for over two decades. Clues From Beyond is the follow-up to her bestselling book Never Alone, where she explores the truth about some intense real-life Australian crimes.

Debbie now answers the Booktopia Book Guru’s Ten Terrifying Questions.

1. To begin with why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself – where were you born? Raised? Schooled?

I was born in Sydney and grew up in Lalor Park in the Western Suburbs of Sydney. I have one sibling a younger brother named Michael. I went to school at Lynwood Park Public School and went to Blacktown Girls High School. I left school in Year 10 after doing my school certificate and undertook an apprenticeship at Photoset Computer Services which was a subsidiary of Australian Consolidated Press. I was apprenticed as a Typesetter/Compositor Graphic Artist. I also studied Graphic Design at Randwick TAFE.

2. What did you want to be when you were twelve, eighteen and thirty? And why?

I wanted to be an Artist/Graphic Designer/Photographer at the age of 12. I loved to draw and create. It was my dream to work in a creative area.

At age 18 I wanted to become a scuba diving instructor and travel the world. I began to work my through the different diving certificates to become an instructor when I had a diving accident. As a result of the accident I had to have an operation to repair a small hole in the oval window of my right inner ear. This was the end of my diving career. It was also the beginning of my journey of experiencing Tinnitus and then later the voices of spirits through my damaged ear.

At age thirty I was a mother of my first child and I worked part-time as a Typesetter/Graphic Designer. During this time I had a miscarriage and from that moment onwards I went through a spiritual awakening and I began to see, feel and hear dead people. This was not my chosen vocation by any means. However, this was the beginning of my career as a psychic/clairvoyant/medium and psychic/detective.

3. What strongly held belief did you have at eighteen that you do not have now?

I questioned if there was life after death at age 18. I now know there is life after death as I have contact with the those who are deceased every day of my life.

4. What were three big events – in the family circle or on the world stage or in your reading life, for example – you can now say, had a great effect on you and influenced you in your career path?

The three big events in my life have been:

1. The death of my paternal grandfather when I was 15 years of age was a life changing experience for me. My grandfather was an artist and we were very close; he was the first person in my life that I was close to who died. It was through his guidance and encouragement that I pursued being a Graphic Designer. After his death I always hoped that there would be a way for me to see him again. After he died he would come to visit me at night and I would see him come and sit on the end of my bed until I went to sleep. When my first child was born on my grandfather’s birthday, I knew that my baby son was a gift from him.

2. Six Near Death Experiences and the miscarriage of my 2nd child opened up my spiritual awareness. This event thrust me into the world of spirit where I began to see, hear and feel what happened to murder victims. This experiences are the most traumatic times in my life, as at the time I had no understanding of how to harness my new-found abilities. I had to go on a journey of self-discovery to learn how to control and utilise my abilities in a positive way.

Embracing my psychic abilities has been a life-changing experience. It is not a path I would have consciously chosen, however, this ability chose me.

3. Embracing my psychic abilities has been a life-changing experience. It is not a path I would have consciously chosen, however, this ability chose me. I have come to realise that everything happens for a reason, even if at the time we do not understand fully what that reason is. I now dedicate my life assisting others with understanding their abilities and donating my time to assist on unsolved police cases in Australia and throughout the world. On looking back on my life, I wouldn’t want to change a thing, as these experiences have made me who I am today.

5. Considering the innumerable electronic media avenues open to you – blogs, online newspapers, TV, radio, etc – why have you chosen to write a book?

The reason I chose to write a book is because a book is a personal item, that can be touched, held and re-read. There is something special about the attachment that people have to books. It can sit quietly on a shelf storing information and memories that can be shared with others.

6. Please tell us about your latest book…

Clues From Beyond is the follow-up to my first book Never Alone. Clues From Beyond is about my personal journey while working as a Psychic Detective on some of Australia’s most horrific crimes. I share with you the challenges, triumphs and the disappointments that I experience while working on cases. Clues From Beyond, is most importantly about the victims and the efforts they go through to find closure and find their way back to their families.

7. If your work could change one thing in this world – what would it be?

The most important thing I would like to achieve with my work in this world is to provide closure. I would do anything to be able to provide at least one of the families I have worked with the opportunity to bring their missing loved one home and be able to put them to rest in the manner in which they deserve.

8. Whom do you most admire and why?

There are two people who I really admire. Firstly, Chris Martin from Coldplay. I find his lyrics and music very positive, uplifting and inspiring. His words touch my soul and I can see that he is connected to a greater consciousness that is part of our amazing Universe.

Secondly, Mike Dooley – Notes from the Universe. Mike is another amazing inspirational person in my life. His positive messages of love and hope from the Universe make us all realise that life is truly worth living, we just really need to remember to get out and be amongst life instead of complaining about it.

9. Many people set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?

Since my Near Death Experiences I look at life with new eyes. My ambition is to help people understand that love and life exists beyond this lifetime. I would like to inspire others to focus on the positives in their lives no matter what challenges they encounter along the way, as everything happens for a reason. Last but not least, make every beat of your heart count. Write a spiritual bucket list and start to tick off all of those things you have always wanted to achieve. Focus on what you can change and not on what you can’t and always “Believe in you!”

10. What advice do you give aspiring writers?

My best advice to aspiring writers, never take “No” for an answer. You have an amazing story within you to be told, start the process of writing and visualise your book upon the shelf. “You Can Do It!”

Thank you for playing, Debbie!
