The history of sexually manipulative women from biblical times to today.

The author of the acclaimed Prozac Nation indulges her passion for difficult women with five extended essays linking the lives of various exponents of 'pussy' (or 'girl' if you prefer) power from Delilah to Hilary Clinton, via Sylvia Plath. The saucy nude author photograph adorning the covers and the boisterous jacket blurb strike a pose which, to an extent, belies the thoughtful, wide-ranging contents but this, surely, is the point - getting beneath the surface to excavate women easily written off and labelled bitches for their pushiness, beauty, insanity, homicidal tendencies and blood-black Chanel Vamp nail polish. The essays are intelligent and provocative but also gossipy, highly personal (her colleagues at The New Yorker now know, if they didn't already, that she likes to have sex on her desk), melodramatic and often self-indulgent in that typically American/Oprah way. A howl of rage at the state we're in as far as gender relations go, by a girl who is desperate to be bad and get away with it. (Kirkus UK)
