The continued expansion and diversification of Australian society after 1891 and the nation's involvement in the 1914-18 World War are illustrated by the 658 entries in this volume, A-Ch, the first of six for the period 1891-1939.

History departments in all Australian universities, the historical and genealogical societies and many individual scholars are co-operating in this continuing national project.

In this volume the entries have been written by 469 authors, most of whom already have published work to their credit. About half the contributors are drawn from university staffs, mostly within Australia. Among the other authors are judges, medical practitioners, librarians, musicians, publishers and anthropologists, and various writers ranging from architects to zoologists.

Since the Dictionary is intended primarily as a work of reference, each entry has a short bibliography, listing material generally accessible as a guide for further research.
