About the illustrator

Tom Jellett was born in Manly, New South Wales, and lived in Brisbane before his family moved to Adelaide. After graduating from the University of South Australia in 1995 with a Bachelor of Design (Illustration) he worked as a freelance illustrator.

He has illustrated a group of books within the Aussie Nibbles series, written by Sherryl Clark, all of which feature Nicholas Nosh, the world's smallest pirate, and has worked with many of our leading Australian children's authors. Tom now lives in Sydney, working as an illustrator for The Australian and was a Walkley finalist in 2000 for newspaper illustration.

Adam wanted to be an astronaut.

It was all he ever thought about, day and night. He read books about astronauts. He watched TV programs about astronauts. He talked about astronauts at home and in school.

Even during lunch, he thought about astronauts. Right now he was trying to make the word 'astronaut' out of letters in his alphabet soup.

'Stop playing with your soup,' said Mum. 'Do you want some cheese on toast?'

'What I really want is to be an astronaut,' said Adam.

'You can't, you're too little,' said his big brother Mike.

'Do you want to come and visit Aunt Sue today?' Mum asked Adam. 'She's having an afternoon tea party with a few friends and neighbours.'

'What I really want is to be an astronaut!'

Mum sighed. 'One day you might be an astronaut, but not today, okay?'

After lunch Adam went to his room to get ready for Aunt Sue's afternoon tea party.

He put on his space suit, which looked rather like Mike's parka.

He put on his space helmet, which looked rather like Mike's bike helmet.

Then he put on his breathing apparatus, which looked rather like Mike's snorkel.

Finally he pulled on his moon boots, which looked rather like Mike's rubber boots.

'I'm ready,' he said.

Mike frowned when he saw Adam. 'I'm glad I'm not coming to afternoon tea with you,' he said. 'You look like a nerd.'

'No I don't,' said Adam. 'I look like an astronaut.'
