When Harry 'borrows' his dad's latest invention, a top secret mobile earphone that can act on your thoughts, it seems it can do anything, even tell him the answers in his maths test. But when the phone starts to get Harry into trouble, he doesn't seem able to take it off!

Chapter One

Monday is the day my life starts getting weird.

My bestie, Paddy, hands me his new phone and says, 'Here. Take my photo.'

It's the first time he's let me touch his phone since he got it last week and I curl my fingers around it, wishing I had a cool uncle who brought me phones back from America. Even though my dad designs phones, my olds won't let me have a mobile until I start high school next year.

I enviously check the apps. I've been reading about these phones in my dad's magazines for ages and I'm hoping I'll get one for Christmas.

Paddy pinches the phone between his fingers and slides it out of my hand. 'Don't get too comfortable holding that, Hazza,' he jokes. But then, seeing my disappointment, he adds, 'Here, check it out.' He presses each feature in turn. 'Built-in stereo speakers, more storage than a Qantas jumbo black box, dedicated playback buttons, quick-launch key, top-notch headphones and a 4-millimetre jack – and if you're too lazy to hold it up, there's a fold-out stand at the back of the handset.' Paddy folds out the stand and balances it on top of his head. It perches there like a mini-Eiffel-Tower.

By the time we reach the oval the school's practically empty and he's still going. '. . . an 8.1-megapixel camera, awesome movie app, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G HSPA connectivity and GPS, and you can geo-tag photos.' He slides the phone open to display the 6-centimetre screen. Man, it's the bomb.' He sighs happily. 'And,' he adds, 'it converts file formats between the handset and PC. But it's Windows-only.'

'Awww, that sucks. Better get rid of it – it's obviously trash.' I hold out my hand, hoping he'll give it back, but he doesn't.

'No can do, sorry. I'm trying to keep it low profile. If Bozo gets wind of it he'll rip it off me – even though he'll say he has a cooler, more expensive model.'

'Yep, that's a given.'

'I bet your old man's already invented phones cooler than this.'

'Not that I've seen. He keeps saying he's got the design of the future but then his mobile rings and he never finishes telling me about it.'

'Is he still being weird about you having a mobile phone?' Paddy asks.

I nod, even though we've had this same conversation many times before.

'I don't get it. The guy's at the cutting edge of mobile phone technology, head engineer of a test team, all the newest inventions go through his lab, and yet he won't let you have one.'

'That about sums it up,' I say, feeling sorry for myself. 'Dad'd let me but Mum's dead against it. She says they're unhealthy and anti-social.' Paddy chuckles. 'I get what she means though.' I put a hand to my ear as if I'm holding a phone and point at Paddy with the other. 'This is what a conversation with my old man looks like.'

'You can't put humans on hold!' Paddy laughs.

'Well, he does. He figures I'll freeze in place just so long as he keeps pointing at me. Sometimes I go to my room and call him on the landline if I really need an answer to something.'

There's a whirring noise and a football hurtles full force straight at us through the chilly afternoon air. Paddy and I hit the grass, roll down the embankment and come to a slightly painful stop on the concrete footpath.

'Stay off the oval!' And there he is: Bozo, real name Bobo Borbolino, class meathead.
