The European Commission is very much at the heart of the European Union. It undertakes a large number of responsibilities, exercises a wide variety of roles, and is the institution which is most readily associated and identified with the Union's many different activities. The Commission is not only in many respects the most important of the European Union's institutions, it is also the most controversial. Its controversiality arises primarily from the fact that it is in a position to exercise extremely important policy and administrative powers, yet it is an appointed rather than an elected body. The Commission therefore needs to be understood. Surprisingly, however, relatively little has been written about it. This book makes a major contribution to furthering understanding of the Commission by bringing together a broad range of different perspectives on different aspects of the nature and functioning of the Commission. Each of the chapters in the book is written by a relevant expert and is based on new research.
