Discover the triumphs and tragedies of 24 heroic Australasians during World War One and Two. Read the biographies of ANZAC soldiers, as well as Air Force and Navy soldiers, medics, a spy, an ambulance driver and a humanitarian, surviving in battles in England, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific. ANZAC Heroes includes famous soldiers such as New Zealand's double Victoria Cross recipient Charles Upham, and much-honoured Australian Hughie Edwards. You will also find not-so-well known indigenous soldiers, Albert Knight from Australia and Peter Buck from New Zealand, and brave females Olive King, Joice Loch, and New Zealander, Dr Jessie Scott.

About the Author

Maria Gill born in Auckland, New Zealand went to school in the city until her parents migrated to Australia. For several years, they lived in a caravan and travelled the outbacks. With travel in the blood she later backpacked her way around the world; riding camels in Egypt, a donkey in Greece, an elephant in India, biking in Nepal and China, and train-hopping throughout Europe. When she came back to New Zealand she trained as a Primary school teacher and taught 10-11 year olds until she had her own children. Now she lives on a 10 acre lifestyle block in the country writing children's stories full time. Maria Gill has carved a niche for herself writing children's non-fiction books about the wildlife and environment. Her second book 'Bird's-eye View' was shortlisted in the LIANZA Elsie Locke Awards and voted a Storylines Notable book in 2007. Her fourth book 'Rangitoto' was a finalist in the New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards in 2010. 'Save Our Seas' - her fifth book - was a Storylines Notable book in 2010. In 2011, New Holland Publishers (NZ) Ltd releases her 8th and 9th books: 'The Call of the Kokako' and 'New Zealand Hall of Fame'. Maria has since qualified with a Graduate Diploma in Journalism Studies and now also writes freelance journalism articles for the educational and literature markets, as well as educational books.

Heroes

5

Apart from being well researched and approachably written ,what I enjoyed most about 'Anzac Heroes' was the opportunity to find out about lesser known Australian & NZ heroes. Maori doctor Peter Buck interested me. So did Olive King , Nancy Wake and New Zeander Dr Jessie Scott. Well designed with easy to follow links and resources,it's the kind of book you can dip into. Double page spead for each hero but also useful maps , sidebars of facts and datelines to put material into context. An excellent school resource but it has a wider readership amongst adults too. I left it on my coffee table while I was reading it and vistors kept 'borrowing' the book. Sign of a readable book.

Accessible Heroes

5

Accessible design and writing style inspire confidence that the book has been well researched. Liked the range of heroes chosen from varied roles and locations and a mixture of male & female with even a spy. Historical and geographic context supplied with maps and timelines Excellent bibliography and index. Would be a very appropriate gift for a family interested in history and for students studying heroes. While I knew some of the heroes presented in their double paged spreads, others were new to me. That was a bonus, and an indication of the excellent research. Will appeal to those with New Zealand or Australian links but also for a general reader. Layout excellent.
