While en route to her grandmother's house in a small town in North Dakota, Elizabeth Robins is abducted and forced to endure physical and emotional abuse at the hands of a deranged sheriff. After being dumped in a ditch and left to die, the young woman is found and cared for by a kind and gentle young man. Through a miscommunication he begins to call her ANNA, thus beginning the change that will completely overtake the young woman. Through her own determination, and his tender care and support, ANNA regains her health and self-confidence. Because of other commitments the two must part and go on with their lives even though they are sure they have already fallen in love during the weeks of ANNA'S convalescence. When ANNA finally returns months later, Jim Spencer is determined to marry her as soon as possible and keep her from ever leaving again.
