Endocrine disruptors are chemical compounds that, among other harmful effects, cause birth defects in humans and animals. They include DES, an anti-nausea drug used in the 1950s during pregnancy, and may be found in over 70 common chemicals ranging from pesticides to plastics. This book looks at recent developments in the area and examines screening/monitoring methods and analytical techniques.

"From a recent Society meeting in Boston, 10 papers address the effects and emerging issued [sic] involving chemicals that might have adverse effects on the endocrine systems of humans, wildlife, and research animals. They consider the results of current efforts to develop screening methods for the disrupters, attempts to develop confirmatory monitoring and measuring methods to complement the screening, and regulatory and policy issues relating to the chemicals in the environment and food."--SciTech Book News"From a symposium on endocrine disruptors held at the 216th ACS National Meeting in Boston, this book addresses many of the issues and concerns originally voiced in the book Our Stolen Future, by Theo Colburn, et al., which was published in 1996 and created a world debate on the subject. Rather than seeking to end the debate, these chapters work to define the issues, delineate the scope of the potential problem, and detail the analytical technologies involved." --Today's Chemist at Work, May 2000 "From a recent Society meeting in Boston, 10 papers address the effects and emerging issued [sic] involving chemicals that might have adverse effects on the endocrine systems of humans, wildlife, and research animals.
