Some time back when witches were respected and the community run by Squire and Rector, barefoot twins Sara and Becca find in the woods a naked little boy whose only vocalizations are seagull cries. When even the foundling home rejects him as a bird or elf child, the twins' mother takes him into their home, from which local wise woman Janey Tregose is sure he'll return to the fairies in a year and a day. How her prediction comes true, but with a happy postscript, makes for a shorter, slighter Mayne, without his characteristic subjective intensity - but with an atmospheric reminder of the one-time intimacy between plain folk and magic.
