"One of the best series in the history of fantasy."-Los Angeles Times

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse-unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen's brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister-the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki-whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

Praise for George R. R. Martin and A Song of Ice and Fire

"One of the best series in the history of fantasy."--Los Angeles Times

"Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers."--The New York Times

"The only fantasy series I'd put on a level with J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings . . . It's a fantasy series for hip, smart people, even those who don't read fantasy."--Chicago Tribune

"Martin amply fulfills the first volume's promise and continues what seems destined to be one of the best fantasy series ever written."--The Denver Post, on A Clash of Kings

"Martin has produced--is producing, since the series isn't over--the great fantasy epic of our era. It's an epic for a more profane, more jaded, more ambivalent age than the one Tolkien lived in."--Lev Grossman, Time

"Addictive . . . George R. R. Martin has created the unlikely genre of the realpolitik fantasy novel."--Rolling Stone, on A Feast for Crows

"Epic fantasy as it should be written: passionate, compelling, convincingly detailed and thoroughly imagined."--The Washington Post, on A Dance with Dragons

"I always expect the best from George R. R. Martin, and he always delivers."--Robert Jordan

Awesome as a collectors piece

It's awesome! The books are on the smaller side but their well made and awesome as a collectors piece like i have them as.

Product is great. Love them, they are my pride and joy.

I am a massive fan of Game of Thrones and when I saw this set, I had to get it. They are a true collectors item. The books are a little smaller to the regular size due to thinner pages and a smaller size and font. However, this only makes them easier to hold in your hand, and I have no issues with the font size, I have definitely seen smaller font in other books that is harder to read. The leather is good quality and so far the books have held together perfectly and attract a lot of attention from visitors. Love them.

Beautiful Boxed Set

Absolutely beautiful set of books! I will note for any potential buyers that the overall size of these books are very small. The books have very thin, Bible like pages and small font.

Perfect in every way.... except the size

The story goes without saying, it is fantastic. This book set is beautifully bound and presented, and arrived in pristine condition. I am disappointed that the size of the books (individually) and more importantly the size of the font, is not included in the product details. If it was i wouldn't have bought them. I can hold them and smell them and love them, but alas i can not read them.

The Game of Thrones leather bound box set is a great to own. It is beautifully presented but note that the books are smaller in size than a normal hard back. This is even better as it makes the book easier to hold whilst reading!!!!

About the Author

George R.R. Martin was born September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.

Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: "The Hero," sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.

In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.

As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.

In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.

Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.
