The future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance. In the east, Daenerys, last scion of House Targaryen, her dragons grown to terrifying maturity, rules as queen of a city built on dust and death, beset by enemies. Now that her whereabouts are known many are seeking Daenerys and her dragons. Among them the dwarf, Tyrion Lannister, who has escaped King’s Landing with a price on his head, wrongfully condemned to death for the murder of his nephew, King Joffrey.

But not before killing his hated father, Lord Tywin. To the north lies the great Wall of ice and stone – a structure only as strong as those guarding it. Eddard Stark's bastard son Jon Snow has been elected the 998th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, but he has enemies both in the Watch and beyond the Wall, where the wildling armies are massing for an assault. On all sides bitter conflicts are reigniting, played out by a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves. The tides of destiny will inevitably lead to the greatest dance of all…

So much to dance about.

Awesome, great storyline with original characters and plot, long but brilliant. It needs to be long so the journey doesn't end!

More ASOIAF goodness...

4

By the time I'd read through the four books before this installment in the ASOIAF series, I was reading in a blur, characters and storylines from the series becoming a big mish-mash in my head. I remember being so blown away by the story and size of the third book that the fourth and fifth books seemed relatively underwhelming, and I could feel my interest waning and I kind of grinded through this one, just so i could be finished. Having said that, there are some amazing developments to be discovered here, and this series/book is definitely worth giving a second going over so as to more closely follow the intricate plots.

Good Choice

5

The complicated plot is well worth persevering with and you quickly catch on to the author's method of flitting between characters. A great read for all lover's of fantasy writing although not recommended for younger readers due to it's sexual content.

Great read....with a magnifying glass

Game of Thrones is a great series - very entertaining. What lets this book down is not the story but the quality of the print. The font is far too small to be an enjoyable read.

An Endless World

5

This book leaves the imagination of the reader wandering all over the land of Westeros thos beyond. The story is constantly deepening calling on the finer details to make the whole book flow, leading to easy predictions by the reader that Martin then smashes with a certain elegance. A must read for any who love a truly great tale

'Of those who work in the grand epic fantasy tradition, Martin is by far the best' Time Magazine

'Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome' SFX '

The sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads ... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias' Guardian

George R. R. Martin

George R.R. Martin was born September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.

Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: "The Hero," sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.

In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.

As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.

In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.

Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.
