"50 Ways to Leave Your 40s" is an interactive, thoughtful, and entertaining gift book for the midlifer. Its fifty chapters, or Ways, are loosely divided into four sections: Body, Mind, Soul, and Heart. The clever title of each of the 50 ways suggests the main theme of that chapter, and reflects the humour that is woven throughout some serious (and some not so serious) topics in the book. The book's message is that the transition out of your 40s is a time of opportunity, growth and celebration, with a good belly laugh thrown in. Each chapter has five sections. The core essay creatively addresses one of numerous midlife issues. There is also, in each way, a section entitled "Cool Moves," which is a description of something physical the reader might like to try - a yoga position, a game, an exercise, and so on.The section "Scribbles and Doodles" offers writing or drawing prompts for further introspection and creative exploration, related to the theme of the chapter. "Things to Try at Least Once" is a list of unique fun or challenging activities - inspiring activities that you may have been putting off for the past 40 years. "Doc in the Box" is a brief explanation of a related health topic, explaining alternative treatments or a physical experience of aging in clear language and then offering tips to stay healthy. Not a book to be read at one sitting from beginning to end, this is more like a treasure box, that you can pick up from time to time, sifting through to find a different sparkling gem each time.
