In March and April 1942, RAAF 75 Squadron bravely defended Port Moresby for 44 days when Australia truly stood alone against the Japanese. This group of raw young recruits scrambled ceaselessly in their Kittyhawk fighters to an extraordinary and heroic battle, the story of which has been left largely untold.

The recruits had almost nothing going for them against the Japanese war machine, except for one extraordinary leader named John Jackson, a balding, tubby Queenslander - at 35 possibly the oldest fighter pilot in the world - who said little, led from the front, and who had absolutely no sense of physical fear.

Time and time again this brave group were hurled into battle, against all odds and logic, and succeeded in mauling a far superior enemy - whilst also fighting against the air force hierarchy. After relentless attack, the squadron was almost wiped out by the time relief came, having succeeded in their mission - but also paying a terrible price.

Michael Veitch, actor, presenter and critically acclaimed author, brings to life the incredible exploits and tragic sacrifices of this courageous squadron of Australian heroes.

Even if the discussion and analysis (of certain of the aspects of this WWII air campaign) tends to leave someone like me feeling a bit bemused and perplexed at times, I do know one thing for sure...it IS high time that somebody DID grapple with these various difficult, and sometimes almost indigestible considerations relating to this amazingly heroic and little known phase in our military history. Who better than Michael Veitch, with his strong background as an author in this area, to do it. I commend him for his willingness to take on what must have been such an extremely daunting project, and to do it so well as this!

Veitch makes war human, especially the impossible challenges faced by 75 Squadron against the superior Japanese planes. It held my interest on every page.

The author has previously made a stage reading of his earlier book "Flak", about flying bombers over Europe. It did not sensationalise war, but did record a variety of personal stories that will soon disappear with the advancing years of those pilots.

Enjoyed the read. My father was in RAAF as an aircraft mechanic and this story shows how dedicated the airmen etc were, particularly against overwhelming odds and attrocious conditions.

                Comments about 44 Days:

Michael Veitch has done a great job in bringing to life the men that defended this country in Australia's own "darkest hour". This is as desperate as it gets, and is right up there with the Battle of Britain, Malta and Tobruk.
I felt a great sense of pride that these pilots and ground crew stood tall when our country faced invasion, which was then followed by disgust, in the complete lack of support and recognition afforded to them from the senior ranks and authorities post 44 days. Post WW2. Great read.
It is a shame that they are all gone now, for I would have liked to look them in the eye, shake their hand, and say thank you.
Thank you to Michael Veitch for all the effort that goes into this body of work for the younger generations.

The material in this book should be much more widely known by all who value the efforts of those who saved us in WW2, both in relation to those who fought and those who impeded them with bureaucracy and bad decisions.
