The inspiring story of martial arts Sensei, Nadine Champion and the techniques she's developed to find courage when she needed it. A book for anyone who has ever been afraid or wished they had more courage.

We are all fighting for something and could use a short burst of courage to help face our fears. Not many people have the opportunity to learn about life from a living martial arts Master like Nadine did, so through sharing her story she is able to pass on the life-altering lessons she was taught. These are universally touching ideas of courage, fear, resilience, self doubt and belief, overcoming adversity, sacrifice, illness and the bravery to seize opportunities. People share similar fears and pains. Most are afraid of illness or death (for themselves or their loved ones), they are afraid of failing (especially publicly) but also are scared of never living up to their potential for a full life.

10 Seconds of Courage will provide inspiration and easy to use practical solutions for facing our fears, big or small. Concepts such as the 'I Am', 'Why Not You' and 'Emotional Volume Control' are simple but have a profound effect on changing your thinking for the better. These are conversation starters and form the basis for an online Community of Courage where people can share how they use their 10 Seconds of Courage and all the themes from the book.

About the Author

Nadine Champion is a fighter, inside the ring and out. As a martial artist with almost 30 years' experience and an undefeated full contact fighter, Nadine has learnt a lot about inner strength. She has translated the lessons learnt in the ring to academic and professional success: she has even used them to WIN her fight against cancer. Boasting a gold medal from the World Cup of Martial Arts, Nadine passes on 20 years' worth of unique lessons learnt from her Sensei: world champion fighter Benny 'the Jet' Urquidez.

As a High Performance Coach at the UFC Gym Sydney, Nadine has successfully prepared clients for marathons, ultra-endurance races (North Face 100km) and competitive fighting. The discipline Nadine instils in her students ensures they successfully achieve their goals, whether that is skill development, building external or internal strength or even sparring or becoming a fighter. She holds Titles in both Thai boxing and kickboxing and remains undefeated in all her fighting disciplines.

Nadine is an inspiring speaker with an inspiring and surprisingly relatable story. She uses her unique '10 seconds of courage' approach to help people find strength in all that they do.

Such an amazing and interesting story. I read this book in a day, great page turner and was surprised by how relevant the story was to me even through I have never exercised a day in my life let alone have an interest in fighting. Well done Nadine and thank you for sharing your courageous story, very brave and I feel all the more powerful for reading it. A+

Reflecting on what I read in Nadine's book helped me get to the end of a 50km charity walk. It took me 10 seconds of courage to say yes to taking on this walking and fundraising challenge, but then I had to back it up on the day. After walking for 13 hours and knowing that I still had 5 more hours to go in the dark, when my knees were telling me to stop and not go on, I kept thinking of Nadine's words… she said that pain will subside, so remember to find strength in yourself to push through the 'I can't do this' thoughts… the pain will subside but regret of not completing or trying your best will stay with you. This book was an enjoyable read. Getting to know Nadine through the pages of the book I found her messages easy to relate to because she was just a 'normal' person who's aim is to pass on a message that everybody has courage inside of them, just give yourself 10 seconds, and have courage to say yes. Overall, I have enjoyed this book and have picked up some great tips and key messages that I use to keep myself motivated.

Insights into another life

Reading this I thought that had we met as kids, we would have got on just fine. Such is the candor that Nadine has written her story with. People often talk about leaving it all on the table but there aren't so many who do. Nadine Champion can certainly say that she has. Travelling to the US to live on canned tuna and sleep in a gym just to have exposure to one of the best trainers in her field is one such example. To know the emotional roller-coaster ride that accompanied this dedication is a real insight in what it takes to stay true to oneself. This background story to the 10 seconds of courage that Nadine used repeatedly to pull through some tough challenges illustrates that it isn't when you are confident that it works best but rather when you really don't know how you are going to get through.

Entertaining and will challenge you to be be your best self.

Apart from it being a pretty cool story, it shows that you cant always judge a person by what they are doing at any particular moment. Nadine proves that no matter how down and difficult it may all seem, there is always a road up and out. It just takes some good old fashioned hard work, some guidance and belief. Thanks Nadine for providing me with some guidance and reinforcing my belief.

I'm going to bring Rocky Balboa into this review. I'm someone who loves to watch the Rocky movies, especially when my own life is more trough than peak. I love a good training montage, but most of all I love to watch a good, kind person give everything of themselves in a series of battles. The feeling you get when you're on the edge of your seat, aghast at the smackdowns and willing Rocky to get up? That's the same feeling I got as I was reading Nadine's book. She's a woman and a champion fighter, which is unusual and fascinating enough to pique my interest on its own. But she's also funny and wise, and now a sensei in her own right. She pulls back the curtain on the inner workings of MMA fighting, and the sensei-student relationship, which is fascinating in itself. Some of her fights, though – like her fight with cancer – are ones she didn't choose to walk into, and they're just as important to her story. I guess the difference to Rocky is that you know (even though you pretend not to) that he's gonna triumph. He'll run up those stairs and celebrate with the statue somehow. The triumph part is never guaranteed in real life, and that's what Nadine writes about. The glorious, terrifying uncertainty of life, and how you can only work on yourself and your mindset to prepare yourself for it the best way you can. This is a gripping, humbling, moving, inspiring book. It made me laugh out loud, tear up and resolve to be a better person, sometimes all at the same time. I challenge you to read this book and watch her TED talk and not get something in your eye.
